Disclaimer
Due to the virtual absence of side effects, there are not many contraindications of yoga therapy. However, caution should be exercised in major physical illness like severe cardiovascular disability, spondylosis and bleeding ulcer when present. Caution is also suggested in patients with seizure disorder, hypochondriasis, glaucomatous visual field defect (Bertschinger, 2007). Yogic practices that involve the use of rapid breathing have been found to precipitate an epileptic attack in individuals suffering from epilepsy (Lansky ,2006; Yardi, 2001).
Meditation is not recommended in depression with suicidal ideations and psychosis. In such cases, help must be sought from your GP or hospital physician to deal with the acute presentation. Your yogaphysician is not your GP.
Please consult your yogaphysician before starting yoga and meditation. Yoga is not a immediate or quick remedy to any physical and mental problem. The recommended sessions are on one to one basis and adequate time must be given for desirable effects (Flegal, 2007). It is recommended that one gets the training from a trained personnel with personal experience as yoga teachers with very little experience and inadequate personal sadhna may not have adequate grounding of the subject and can leave a student astray.(Time, 2007).
Lack of motivation can reduce the success of yoga therapy (Singh, 2006).
